Biographical / Historical
The key administrator and head of the program was Roland M. Smith, the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. He worked with a steering committee from 1981 through 1985 to select program participants, identify research mentors, and plan curriculum components. Some of the larger revenue sources for the program were the Rockefeller Foundation, the Buhl Foundation, the NPS Corporation, and the National Scholarship Fund and Service for Negro Students (NSSFNS). When Associate Provost Smith left Carnegie Mellon in 1985, the Black Graduate Students Organization (BGSO) attempted to coordinate with the administration to keep the program going for the summer of 1986 but was unsuccessful.

Overview
The Summer Graduate School Orientation Institute (SGSOI) was held at Carnegie Mellon University each summer from 1981 through 1985. The objective of the program was to help motivate and prepare minority undergraduates to undertake graduate programs in engineering, the sciences, and quantitative social sciences and professions. The keystone activity of the institute was a research internship with a prominent researcher as a mentor. This collection is composed of materials related to the administration and logistics of the program as well as student research and program experiences.
